Camelot Cosmos: Player's Guide (Print)
Camelot Cosmos: Player’s Guide — Print Edition
Arthurian legend reborn across a post-apocalyptic cosmos.
Camelot Cosmos combines Arthurian romance, science fiction and post-apocalyptic adventure in a setting where knights, mages and holy relics exist alongside artificial intelligence, combat cyborgs and virtual reality.
The principal struggle pits the forces of King Gawain against those of the dreaded Queen Morgan le Fay, with the player characters choosing their place in an epic conflict spanning numerous worlds.
The Matter of Britain Among the Stars
The Camelot Cosmos is a collection of planets profoundly influenced by Arthurian legends.
The people of these worlds remember figures such as Arthur, Merlin, Uther Pendragon and Lancelot, but history and legend have become confused. Their understanding of the past does not necessarily match the familiar medieval romances.
Across the setting:
-
Arthurian culture has taken root on distant planets.
-
Knights and mages coexist with advanced technology.
-
The remains of a lost technological civilisation can still be found.
-
King Gawain and Queen Morgan compete for power.
-
Ancient artefacts and holy relics retain enormous importance.
-
The thirteen Realms offer different settings and societies for play.
The result is a setting built to cross conventional genre boundaries rather than remaining purely fantasy or science fiction.
A Streamlined Version of FATE
The Player’s Guide contains a user-friendly version of the FATE roleplaying system, modified to be quicker, deadlier and easier to use than other versions.
Tests use two six-sided dice: one positive and one negative. The negative result is subtracted from the positive, the appropriate skill is added and the result is compared with a difficulty based upon the FATE Ladder.
Fate points can alter results and help characters deal with stress and consequences.
The rules are intended to get a group through character creation and ready to play within approximately twenty minutes.
Hundreds of Character Options
Characters are built using Aspects and Skills.
The book contains:
-
More than 200 fully described Aspects.
-
100 Skills.
-
Numerous playable races with their own characteristics.
-
Physical or psychological Aspects.
-
Racial or regional Aspects.
-
Professional Aspects.
-
Simple character-creation and combat rules.
Players may choose their options or use random generation.
Once the character’s Aspects have been selected, a short background explains how they acquired them and skill points are assigned within those areas.
A contemporary reviewer tested the process and found that it produced a fully functional character within a few minutes. The same review described the associated skills and descriptions as comprehensive without being excessively long.
Thirteen Realms
The Player’s Guide contains an extensive Gazetteer describing thirteen Realms within the Camelot Cosmos.
It also includes:
-
A player-facing history of the setting.
-
Information on its principal powers and royal courts.
-
Major personalities associated with those courts.
-
The setting’s religious traditions.
-
Details of the worlds and cultures available to player characters.
The range of Realms allows adventures to move between markedly different societies while remaining connected to the wider struggle for the Camelot Cosmos.
A published review particularly praised the breadth of the setting, noting that it combines Arthurian ideas with a variety of recognisable historical and genre influences. The reviewer described the central concept as interesting, the system as straightforward and the setting as potentially very rich.
Clear, Distinctive Presentation
The book uses an uncluttered layout and artwork influenced by Aubrey Beardsley’s Arthurian illustrations.
Printed-circuit imagery is combined with stylised floral decoration, visually reflecting the setting’s mixture of medieval romance and futuristic technology.
