Swords and Shields — Print Edition

Simple rules. Deep tactics. No dice and no hidden information.

Swords and Shields is a tactical board game of paths and blocking for two players.

Players take turns placing tiles on the board. Sword tiles create paths towards the opposite edge, while shield tiles obstruct them. A sword scores when its path reaches the end of the board without being blocked.

Your aim is straightforward:

  • Extend your own scoring paths.

  • Block your opponent’s swords.

  • Anticipate where the next tile will be placed.

  • Finish with the highest score.

The rules are simple to understand, but every placement changes the opportunities available to both players.

Outmanoeuvre Your Opponent

A useful tile can strengthen your own position, frustrate an opposing path or prepare several possibilities for a later turn.

Players must balance immediate scoring opportunities against longer-term control of the board. A move that appears defensive may open a new route elsewhere, while an ambitious path can be stopped by a carefully positioned shield.

There is no elaborate backstory or large body of rules to learn. Swords and Shields concentrates upon the tactical contest between its two players.

A Variable Tactical Game

The game can use between one and five boards, arranged in different ways to alter the playing area.

This allows players to change the scale and layout of their games rather than repeating the same board configuration every time.

The rules can also be modified, making the game suitable for players who enjoy experimenting with variants or adapting board-game concepts for use within their roleplaying settings.

A typical game takes approximately 30–60 minutes.

Physical Print-and-Play Edition

This is the professionally printed print-and-play edition.

The booklet contains the game components in a compact physical format. Detach the cover and cut out the pieces before playing.

Unlike the deluxe edition, this version does not contain heavy cardstock boards or mahjong-style tiles. It provides an economical way to obtain the physical game while retaining the same central rules and tactical play.
