Postmortm Giallo 0002: The Memorial (Print)
Postmortem Giallo 0002: The Memorial — Print Edition
A run-down hospital where malpractice, madness and the supernatural are difficult to tell apart.
The Ernest Spencer Memorial is an ageing hospital populated by troubled patients, overworked staff and people carrying secrets of their own.
Strange events occur throughout the institution, particularly around its psychiatric ward.
Some may have supernatural causes.
Others may be the result of illegal experimentation, medical malpractice or ordinary human cruelty.
Inside the Memorial, nothing is quite what it seems.
A Giallo Horror Adventure Kit
The Memorial is the second title in the Postmortem Giallo series.
Rather than imposing a single linear plot, the book provides a collection of characters, circumstances and potential conflicts from which the Games Master and players can develop their own horror story.
The hospital serves as a contained stage for mystery, psychological horror and giallo-inspired violence. Its cast and circumstances can support different combinations of suspects, victims, investigators and threats.
The story that emerges depends upon which characters are used, what the players investigate and how the Games Master chooses to interpret the hospital’s stranger occurrences.
The Ernest Spencer Memorial
The scenario concentrates particularly upon the hospital’s psychiatric ward.
Alienation and mental illness are central themes. Witnesses may be dismissed as unreliable, leaving characters uncertain whether they have encountered a supernatural manifestation, a delusion or something being deliberately concealed.
The hospital’s problems are not limited to the paranormal. Illegal experiments and medical malpractice offer entirely human explanations for at least some of what happens within its walls.
The Games Master can therefore emphasise:
-
Giallo-style crime and investigation.
-
Psychological and surreal horror.
-
Supernatural events.
-
Institutional wrongdoing.
-
Uncertainty over which explanation is true.
Inspired by Medical and Psychological Horror
The author identifies several influences upon The Memorial, including:
-
Lars von Trier’s Riget.
-
Miloš Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
-
The Killer Nun, the Italian exploitation-horror film.
-
Elements of medical television drama and comedy.
These influences combine within a scenario intended to remain horror despite the occasional presence of the grotesque, bizarre or absurd.
System-Agnostic
The Memorial can be adapted for use with any contemporary horror roleplaying game.
Statistics are provided for Actual F*cking Monsters, but the hospital, characters and situations are not dependent upon that system.
Use it as:
-
A self-contained horror setting.
-
A giallo-inspired scenario.
-
The location for a continuing investigation.
-
A source of characters and conflicts for another modern-horror campaign.
-
A hospital into which an established group has the misfortune to be admitted.
