My Own Dungeon (with blackjack, and hookers) (PDF)
BUILD YOUR OWN DUNGEON
With blackjack.
And hookers.
My Own Dungeon is an ultra-simple, brutal, one-page fantasy role-playing game for killing things, taking their stuff and spending your ill-gotten gains on ale and whores.
That is essentially the entire proposition.
No three-volume core rules. No introductory chapter explaining what a role-playing game is. No carefully managed sequence of balanced encounters ensuring that every adventurer receives the recommended daily allowance of triumph.
Make some characters.
Enter a dungeon.
Try not to die.
AN ENTIRE RPG IN YOUR POCKET
My Own Dungeon is presented as a single-page, print-and-fold pocket game. Print it out, fold it up and carry a complete fantasy role-playing system with you.
It is ideal for:
-
Impromptu games
-
Convention sessions
-
Pub gaming
-
Holidays and journeys
-
Introducing new players to role-playing
-
Filling an evening when the regular campaign falls through
-
Games Masters who have misplaced their enthusiasm for preparation
-
Anyone who believes a rulebook should not require its own carrying case
The rules are deliberately stripped down to the essentials. There is enough structure to create characters, explore dangerous places, fight horrible things and acquire treasure without getting bogged down in a swamp of modifiers, special cases and arguments about the precise tactical implications of standing near a chair.
SIMPLE DOES NOT MEAN SAFE
This is a brutal little game.
Characters are adventurers rather than carefully protected investments. Dungeons are dangerous. Monsters are trying to kill you. Poor decisions may be punished by death rather than a gently worded reminder to use your remaining resources more efficiently.
That is part of the fun.
When the rules get out of the way, the players’ decisions matter more. Search the room. Listen at the door. Set an ambush. Run away. Betray your companions. Return later with more rope, a longer pole and somebody expendable to walk in front.
The game is simple enough to learn quickly and loose enough to improvise around. Use it exactly as presented, bolt on whatever house rules amuse you or build an entire campaign upon its tiny and thoroughly disreputable foundations.
It is called My Own Dungeon, after all.
KILL THINGS. TAKE THEIR STUFF.
Fantasy role-playing does not always need an intricate moral quandary, a twelve-generation royal genealogy or a meticulously plotted campaign exploring the metaphysical consequences of inherited trauma.
Sometimes there is a dungeon.
Sometimes the dungeon contains monsters.
Sometimes those monsters possess things you would rather have.
Go and correct the situation.
Spend your winnings on equipment, carousing and the pleasures of temporary survival. Then return to the dungeon and discover whether greed has once again overcome good judgement.
ALMOST FREE, BUT NOT QUITE
The nominal price is essentially a small donation in support of Postmortem Studios.
In return, you receive a complete pocket role-playing game requiring little more than the rules, some dice, a few players and an unhealthy willingness to open doors marked DO NOT OPEN.
Once you have the rules, you can continue your regrettable adventures with The Blazing Prison of the Metal Court, a compact scenario written for MOD.
One page.
One dungeon.
Several corpses.
With blackjack.
And hookers.
