FANTASY SHOULD HURT

Modern fantasy role-playing has become increasingly heroic, forgiving and safe.

Characters stride through battle after battle, recover from appalling injuries over lunch and acquire enough magical equipment to stock a moderately successful branch of Argos. Death becomes an inconvenience, danger becomes theatre and supposedly terrifying monsters are reduced to carefully balanced parcels of experience points.

That can be tremendous fun.

It is not the only kind of fantasy.

Grimdark: Deadly, Nasty Rules for the World’s Most Ubiquitous RPG is a substantial collection of alternative and additional rules for fifth-edition fantasy games, intended to strip away some of the invulnerability, abundance and polished heroic certainty of the default experience.

This is fantasy in which violence has consequences, resources matter, choices can be unpleasant and survival may depend upon preparation, caution and knowing when to run away.

MAKE VICTORY MATTER AGAIN

A grim and dangerous game should not merely kill characters at random. Arbitrary death is not frightening, challenging or especially clever. It is simply irritating.

Real difficulty gives the players meaningful choices.

Do they press onwards while exhausted and depleted, or retreat and risk losing their opportunity? Do they fight an enemy on its own terms, or gather information and stack every possible advantage in their favour? Do they choose the morally comfortable path, or the one most likely to keep everyone alive?

Grimdark encourages players to think, plan and treat danger seriously. Success is not guaranteed by the encounter mathematics. Heroism is something characters demonstrate through their actions, not something awarded automatically during character creation.

The result is a game in which:

  • Preparation and intelligent tactics make a real difference

  • Limited resources create meaningful pressure

  • Violence feels dangerous rather than routine

  • Difficult decisions carry lasting consequences

  • Retreat can be sensible rather than shameful

  • Victory feels earned rather than scheduled

  • The world no longer rearranges itself for the characters’ convenience

DARKER, DEADLIER FANTASY

Grimdark fantasy is not simply a matter of adding more mud, blood and swearing—though none of those things hurt.

It comes from uncertainty, pressure and consequence. It comes from characters lacking the power and resources to solve every problem cleanly. It comes from forcing people to decide what they are prepared to risk, sacrifice or become in order to survive.

These rules are intended to help Games Masters push fifth-edition play towards harsher fantasy, historical fantasy, dark adventure, survival horror and settings extending from the medieval into the early-modern period.

They can be used to reshape an entire campaign or selected piece by piece to alter the tone of an existing game. Take what suits your table, discard what does not and decide exactly how nasty you want things to become.

NOT AN UNFAIR MEAT-GRINDER

Deadlier rules should make players more careful, not convince them that their decisions are meaningless.

Grimdark is intended to increase tension and difficulty while preserving player agency. Characters may have fewer advantages and less protection than they are accustomed to, but intelligent play still matters.

The danger should be real.

So should the possibility of survival.

This is not a standalone role-playing game. It is a collection of additional and alternative rules intended for use with the fifth edition of the world’s most ubiquitous fantasy RPG.

The shining armour is dented.

The healing potions are running low.

The road ahead is dark, the enemy has the advantage and nobody is coming to save you.

Good luck.

You are going to need it.
