The Brock are not merry woodland folk.

They do not dance beneath the moon, invite strangers to tea or sing chirpy little songs about the beauty of nature. They are reclusive, stubborn and deeply suspicious of anyone who appears to be enjoying themselves without a practical reason.

They are also formidable warriors.

Fifth Fantasy: The Brock introduces a complete badger-like people for compatible Fifth Edition fantasy games, providing both the rules and cultural background needed to create Brock player characters.

Pragmatic, dogged and notoriously difficult to impress, the Brock guard their forest homes with grim determination. Some occasionally venture into the wider world, usually because necessity demands it.

Very rarely because they approve of what everyone else is doing.

Guardians of the Forest

Brock communities keep largely to themselves.

They value endurance, practicality and responsibility over charm or empty promises. Their settlements are protected fiercely, their traditions taken seriously and their opinions expressed with all the cushioning of a falling anvil.

Their isolation does not make them ignorant. A Brock adventurer may leave home to confront a threat, fulfil an obligation, recover something important or investigate what the surrounding civilisations have managed to get wrong this time.

Once committed, they are difficult to discourage and considerably harder to stop.

This makes the Brock well suited to characters who are:

• Stoic and dependable

• Fiercely protective of their companions

• Suspicious of unnecessary complications

• Comfortable in wild and forested country

• More interested in results than applause

• Prepared to solve persistent problems with persistent violence

Not Merely a Set of Statistics

The Brock are presented as a people with their own culture and outlook, rather than a collection of bonuses wearing an animal’s head.

Their isolation, protective instincts and practical temperament provide plenty of material for roleplaying. A Brock character may struggle with the wastefulness, dishonesty and bewildering social rituals of the wider world, while outsiders may find the Brock blunt, dour or simply bloody difficult.

Both assessments can be entirely correct.
