Graveyard of Dreams is a classic work of Golden Age science fiction about economic decay, abandoned technology and the dangerous usefulness of hope. H. Beam Piper gives us an interstellar civilisation littered with the remains of war, but the machinery is less important than the people surrounding it: salvagers, dreamers and desperate men who have invested their planet’s entire future in a machine that may—or may not—be waiting beneath their feet.

Originally published in the February 1958 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction, the story was later expanded into Piper’s novel The Cosmic Computer.
