Michael Manning’s Gor

Michael Manning is an illustrator, writer, comic-book artist, tattoo designer and traditionally trained animator. He is best known for works including:

• Tranceptor

• Inamorata

• Lumenagerie

He has also illustrated adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft and Alexandre Dumas for the Graphic Classics series, while his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and internationally.

His established interest in erotic art, fantasy, mythology and power relationships made him a natural choice to interpret Gor: a world in which exotic cultures, alien creatures, violence, hierarchy and sexuality are inseparable from the setting.

Praised in the Original Books

Reviewers of Tales of Gor and World of Gor repeatedly singled out Manning’s artwork for praise.

One described the illustrations as bespoke work that successfully evokes the complexity of Gor, comparing Manning’s strong chiaroscuro to a comic-book interpretation of Aubrey Beardsley. The same reviewer called two of the images “sublime” and worth the price of admission on their own.

Another praised the pen-and-ink illustrations for capturing the exotic character of the setting, noting that even its more provocative subjects were handled tastefully and that the depictions of Gor’s unusual animals were particularly fascinating.
